The production of pulp is complemented by the production of energy from renewable resources.
The electricity generated meets the needs of the factory, with the surplus being injected into the national power grid. The electricity produced by Caima would be sufficient to power a city with over 50,000 inhabitants and is much higher than the consumption of the neighboring municipalities of Constância, Abrantes, and Vila Nova da Barquinha.
At the Caima factory, energy is produced through cogeneration using biomass. Cogeneration is the process by which electricity and thermal energy are produced simultaneously. Caima's cogeneration system uses only renewable fuels - black liquor and forest biomass - making a significant contribution to the national objective of reducing fossil fuel emissions.
